Crime Prevention Advice – Vehicle Number Plate Theft |
Dear Residents, We are writing to make you aware of recent incidents of vehicle registration number plate theft within the area and to offer advice on how you can help protect your vehicle. Stolen number plates are often used on other vehicles to avoid identification during criminal activity, including fuel theft, burglaries, and speeding offences. Preventing number plate theft helps reduce wider crime and protects you from potential complications. How You Can Protect Your Number Plates Please consider the following crime‑prevention measures: Secure your number plates using tamper‑proof or anti‑theft screws, which are inexpensive and readily available. Park in a secure, well‑lit area whenever possible, preferably on a driveway or in a garage. Cover your vehicle if it is parked for long periods, making access to the plates more difficult. Install CCTV or doorbell cameras overlooking parking areas; visible cameras can act as a deterrent. Check your vehicle regularly, especially if you haven’t used it for a few days. Be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour around parked vehicles, particularly late at night or early morning. If Your Number Plate Is Stolen If you discover that your number plate is missing: Report the theft to the police immediately via 101 or online. Inform the DVLA and your vehicle insurance provider. Replace the plates as soon as possible through a registered supplier. Prompt reporting helps prevent misuse and protects you from potential fines or offences linked to cloned plates. Community Support If you have CCTV covering the street and are willing to assist with enquiries, or if you notice anything suspicious, please report it. Community vigilance plays a key role in reducing crime. Thank you for your continued cooperation in helping to keep our neighbourhood safe.
Kind regards,
